1

You're permanent — no more re-evaluations

The 'P' in P&T means Permanent. The VA will not schedule you for future re-evaluations or reduce your rating. Your 100% disability rating is locked in for life. You should have a letter from the VA confirming your Permanent & Total status — if you don't, request one through VA.gov or call 1-800-827-1000. This letter is required for many of the benefits below.

ChampVA healthcare for your dependents

Your spouse, children, and dependent parents may be eligible for ChampVA — a healthcare program that covers most medical expenses including doctor visits, hospital stays, prescriptions, mental health, and preventive care. Apply using VA Form 10-10d. This is one of the most valuable benefits at 100% P&T — it can save your family thousands per year on healthcare costs. ChampVA is a secondary payer if your dependents have other insurance.

Chapter 35 DEA — education for your family

The Dependents' Educational Assistance (DEA) program provides up to 36 months of education benefits for your spouse and children. This covers college tuition, vocational training, and on-the-job training — currently about $1,400/month. Your dependents apply using VA Form 22-5490. Your children are eligible between ages 18–26. Your spouse may also qualify for the Fry Scholarship if applicable. These education benefits can be worth tens of thousands of dollars.

Add dependents for additional compensation

At 100%, you receive additional compensation for each dependent — approximately $156/month per child, plus additional amounts for your spouse and dependent parents. Use VA Form 21-686c to add dependents. File immediately after marriage, birth, or adoption. If you haven't added your dependents, you're leaving hundreds of dollars on the table every month.

Property tax exemptions

Most states offer partial or complete property tax exemptions for 100% P&T veterans. Some states like Texas, Florida, and Virginia exempt you entirely regardless of home value. Others offer significant reductions. This can save you thousands of dollars every year. Check your specific state — the rules and amounts vary widely.

VA home loan — no down payment, no funding fee

The VA Home Loan program lets you buy a home with no down payment and no private mortgage insurance. As a 100% P&T veteran, you are completely exempt from the VA funding fee — saving you thousands at closing. You can use this benefit multiple times. Apply for your Certificate of Eligibility (COE) at VA.gov to get started.

Student loan discharge

You may be eligible for Total and Permanent Disability (TPD) discharge of your federal student loans. This completely eliminates your remaining federal student loan balance. Apply through the Department of Education at disabilitydischarge.com — you'll need your VA P&T letter. After discharge, there's a 3-year monitoring period. This is not automatic — you must apply.

Caregiver support program

If your spouse or family member provides care for you, the VA's Program of Comprehensive Assistance for Family Caregivers (PCAFC) may provide them with a monthly stipend (based on your location), healthcare coverage through ChampVA, mental health counseling, respite care (up to 30 days/year), and training. Apply using VA Form 10-10CG.

At 100% P&T you also get: free VA dental care (comprehensive, not just emergency), zero copays for all VA healthcare and prescriptions, emergency care authorization at non-VA facilities, automobile adaptive equipment grants (up to ~$22,000), Specially Adapted Housing grants (up to ~$109,986), free National Parks lifetime access pass, commissary and exchange shopping privileges, and Space-A military flights.

State-level benefits — don't leave money on the table

Federal benefits are only half the picture. States offer free license plates, free hunting and fishing licenses, state park passes, education bonuses, employment preferences, state veterans' homes, and more. Some states have no state income tax on VA disability pay (it's already tax-free federally, but some states double up on other exemptions). Check your state.
