What does my rating actually get me?

Your rating is more than a number. It unlocks specific benefits, monthly pay, and programs. Here's what yours means.

Do This First: File an Intent to File

Takes 5 minutes, costs nothing, and locks in your effective date for back pay. Even if you're not ready to file a full claim yet. Learn how →

1

Understand your monthly compensation

VA disability compensation is tax-free monthly pay based on your rating percentage. The amount increases with your rating and with dependents (spouse, children, dependent parents). At 30% and above, you receive additional compensation for each dependent. These rates are adjusted annually for cost of living.

Know what benefits unlock at your level

Different benefits unlock at different rating levels. At 0%, you get VA healthcare. At 10%, you get monthly compensation. At 30%, you get dependent pay and commissary access. At 100%, you get dental, no copays, and more. At 100% P&T, your family gets ChampVA, education benefits, and property tax exemptions in most states.

Check your state-level benefits

Federal benefits are only half the picture. Your state likely offers additional benefits based on your rating — property tax reductions or exemptions, free vehicle registration, state education programs, employment preferences, hunting and fishing license waivers, and more. These vary enormously by state.

Consider if your rating reflects your reality

If your conditions have worsened since your last evaluation, you may be eligible for an increase. If you have conditions that weren't included in your original claim, you can file a new claim. If you believe your rating was calculated incorrectly, you can request a Higher-Level Review. Don't leave benefits on the table.
