About The VA Wayfinder
A free, independent veteran benefits navigator. No ads, no lawyers, no upsells. Built by a veteran who got tired of government-speak.
Why this exists
The Mission
The VA benefits system is one of the most generous in the world — but navigating it feels like it was designed to keep veterans out. Forms with cryptic numbers. Acronyms that nobody defines. Processes that take months with no explanation of why.
The VA Wayfinder exists to translate all of that into plain English. Every page on this site takes a complex VA topic and breaks it down into steps that make sense. No legal jargon, no government-speak, no fine print.
This site will always be free. No ads. No premium tiers. No “sign up to see the rest.” Every veteran deserves to understand what they've earned — without paying a company to explain it.
Operating principles
Our Values
- Always Free
- No subscription, no premium tier, no paywall. The information here is free because it should be.
- Minimal Data
- No account is required. A prompt entered on the home page may be held briefly in your browser's session storage so it can open in chat.
- Plain English
- Every acronym is defined. Every process is explained. If it's not clear, it's our failure, not yours.
- Veteran-First
- This site was built for the veteran sitting at their kitchen table at 2 AM trying to figure out their benefits.
- Independent
- Not affiliated with the VA, any law firm, or any claims company. We don't sell your information to anyone.
- Accessible
- Built with WCAG 2.1 AA accessibility in mind. Screen reader compatible, keyboard navigable, motion-safe.
Continuous route
How It Works
- 1
Start with your situation
Tell us where you are in your VA benefits journey — just separated, filing a claim, denied, or something else. Our journey selector helps you find the right path.
- 2
Follow the steps
Each journey page walks you through the process in order. Plain English explanations, the forms you need, and what to expect at each stage.
- 3
Use the tools
Benefits calculator, condition guides, form walkthroughs, state benefits lookup, and an AI navigator that can answer your specific questions.
- 4
Get connected
When you need a real person, we point you to free VSOs, VA social workers, legal clinics, and peer support — not paid services.
Straight answers
Transparency
- How is this site funded?
- Through personal savings and voluntary Buy Me a Coffee donations. There are no ads, no sponsors, and no paid partnerships. If the site helps you, you can support it — but you never have to.
- Is this affiliated with the VA?
- No. The VA Wayfinder is not affiliated with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, any government agency, any law firm, or any claims company. It is an independent educational resource.
- Is the AI accurate?
- The AI navigator is powered by Claude and trained on VA benefits knowledge. It provides general information, not legal or medical advice. We always recommend verifying with the VA or an accredited VSO.
- Do you collect my data?
- No account is required. A prompt submitted on the home page is temporarily placed in session storage until the chat page reads and removes it. The site includes Vercel Analytics, and service providers may process technical or submitted information. Read the privacy notice for the current details.
Support This Project
