Overview
Benefits Most States Offer
While every state is different, most offer these core veteran benefits.
Property Tax
Most states offer partial or full property tax exemptions for disabled veterans. 100% P&T veterans get the largest exemptions.
Education
Many states offer tuition waivers or scholarships for veterans and their dependents at state colleges and universities.
Employment
Nearly all states offer hiring preferences for veterans in state government positions. Some extend this to state contractors.
Vehicle & Other
Free disabled veteran license plates, hunting and fishing licenses, state park passes, and reduced vehicle registration fees.
Don't leave state benefits on the table
Many veterans only think about federal VA benefits and completely miss their state benefits. In some states, a 100% P&T veteran can save $5,000–$10,000+ per year on property taxes alone. Always check what your state offers — and apply for everything you qualify for.
Tribal Resources
Native American & Tribal Veteran Benefits
Native American veterans and veterans living on tribal lands may have access to additional resources and culturally sensitive care.
IHS & VA Coordination
Indian Health Service (IHS) facilities and the VA have coordination agreements. You can receive care at either system, and some VA services are available at IHS clinics on or near reservations.
Tribal VSOs & Representatives
Some tribes have their own Veterans Service Officers who understand both VA benefits and tribal-specific programs. Contact your tribal government to ask about veteran services.
VA Native American Direct Loan (NADL)
Veterans living on federal trust land can get a VA home loan through the NADL program — no down payment, no private mortgage insurance, and competitive rates.
Culturally Sensitive Care
Many VA facilities offer culturally sensitive mental health services. You can request providers familiar with Native American culture and traditional healing practices alongside clinical care.
Reach out to your tribe first
Many tribal governments have dedicated veteran services coordinators who can help you navigate both VA and tribal benefits. If you're unsure where to start, contact your tribal administration and ask about veteran programs. You can also call the VA at 1-800-827-1000 and ask about services for Native American veterans in your area.
