Overview
Four Categories Worth Checking
Availability and eligibility differ by state and locality. Treat these as questions to verify, not promised benefits.
- Property Tax
- Ask the state and local tax authority about exemptions or credits, residency, rating, home-use, income, and filing rules.
- Education
- Ask about current waivers, scholarships, eligible family members, approved schools, deadlines, and coordination with federal benefits.
- Employment
- Check current hiring preference, licensing, training, and documentation rules with the state or hiring authority.
- Vehicle & Other
- Check vehicle, plate, registration, parks, hunting, and fishing programs with the agency that administers each one.
Verify amounts and eligibility before relying on them
State and local programs can change with legislation, budgets, residency, property use, disability findings, and filing dates. Confirm the current rule with the state veterans agency and the local office that actually administers the program.
Tribal Resources
Native American & Tribal Veteran Benefits
Native American veterans and veterans living on tribal lands may have access to additional resources and culturally sensitive care.
IHS & VA Coordination
Indian Health Service (IHS) facilities and the VA have coordination agreements. You can receive care at either system, and some VA services are available at IHS clinics on or near reservations.
Tribal VSOs & Representatives
Some tribes have their own Veterans Service Officers who understand both VA benefits and tribal-specific programs. Contact your tribal government to ask about veteran services.
VA Native American Direct Loan (NADL)
Eligible Native American veterans and spouses may be able to use the NADL program for a home on federal trust land when VA, tribal, property, credit, income, and occupancy requirements are met.
Culturally Sensitive Care
Many VA facilities offer culturally sensitive mental health services. You can request providers familiar with Native American culture and traditional healing practices alongside clinical care.
Reach out to your tribe first
Many tribal governments have dedicated veteran services coordinators who can help you navigate both VA and tribal benefits. If you're unsure where to start, contact your tribal administration and ask about veteran programs. You can also call the VA at 1-800-827-1000 and ask about services for Native American veterans in your area.
