Understanding Your Rating
Use this route to identify the program-specific rules and records to check for your rating.
Your route checklist
4 stepsStep 01
Understand your monthly compensation
VA disability compensation is tax-free monthly pay based on the combined rating and other applicable rules. Veterans rated at least 30% may receive added compensation for qualifying dependents after VA adds them to the award. Use VA's current rate table for amounts.
Step 02
Check programs that may consider your rating
Compensation and other benefits use different eligibility rules. A service-connected rating can affect healthcare priority and copays; compensation generally begins at 10%, and eligible dependents may add compensation at 30% or higher. Dental, CHAMPVA, education, commissary, and state benefits each have separate requirements.
Step 03
Check your state-level benefits
States may offer separate programs such as property-tax relief, vehicle-registration benefits, education programs, employment preferences, or license discounts. Eligibility varies by state, disability status, residency, and other program-specific rules.
Step 04
Consider if your rating reflects your reality
If a service-connected condition has worsened, you can review whether an increased-rating claim fits. If you disagree with a recent decision, use the deadline and review options in the decision letter; Higher-Level Review is limited to the existing record and generally must be requested within one year.
