100% P&T Veterans
A 100% rating is the highest schedular rating, and P&T means VA considers the total disability not expected to improve. Additional programs have their own eligibility rules.
Your route checklist
10 stepsStep 01
Understand what P&T means
P&T means VA considers your total disability not expected to improve. VA generally does not schedule routine future examinations for static disabilities, but P&T is not the same as an unconditional lifetime lock. Check your decision and benefit-summary letters for your exact status.
Step 02
Check CHAMPVA eligibility for your dependents
A spouse or child of a veteran rated P&T may qualify for CHAMPVA if they aren't eligible for TRICARE and meet the program's other rules. CHAMPVA shares the cost of covered services; other insurance and Medicare requirements can affect coverage. Apply using VA Form 10-10d.
Step 03
Chapter 35 DEA — education for your family
An eligible spouse or child may qualify for Dependents' Educational Assistance (DEA) for approved education or training. Eligibility periods, months of entitlement, and payment rates depend on the person's circumstances and current VA rules. Apply using VA Form 22-5490 and verify the current rate at VA.gov.
Step 04
Add dependents for additional compensation
Veterans rated 30% or higher may receive additional compensation for eligible dependents once VA adds them to the award. Amounts vary by rating and family situation and change over time. Use VA Form 21-686c or the current VA.gov process, and review effective-date rules before delaying.
Step 05
Property tax exemptions
Many states or localities offer property-tax relief for disabled veterans, but rating, residency, home-value, and application rules vary. Check the current program with your state veterans agency and local tax authority before relying on an exemption.
Step 06
Check VA home-loan and funding-fee rules
A VA-backed home loan may offer no-down-payment financing and no monthly private mortgage insurance when lender and VA requirements are met. Many veterans receiving disability compensation are exempt from the funding fee. Check your Certificate of Eligibility and lender disclosure for your status.
Step 07
Student loan discharge
You may qualify for Total and Permanent Disability discharge of eligible federal student loans. This is a U.S. Department of Education program with its own eligibility, notification, and post-discharge rules. Verify the current process and consequences before acting.
Step 08
Caregiver support program
PCAFC may provide support if VA approves both the Veteran or service member and the family caregiver. Core Veteran criteria include a single or combined service-connected rating of at least 70% and a need for at least 6 continuous months of qualifying in-person personal care; other participant and care-plan rules also apply. Apply jointly using VA Form 10-10CG.
Step 09
Check dental and other programs
A 100% rating or P&T status may support eligibility for VA dental care, reduced healthcare copays, adaptive-equipment or housing grants, commissary privileges, and other federal programs. Each program has separate rules; verify eligibility and current amounts on its official page before applying or spending money.
Step 10
Verify state and local programs
State and local veterans programs may cover tax, education, employment, vehicle, recreation, or care needs, but availability, amounts, residency, and filing rules vary. Use the state page to reach the responsible agency and verify the current requirements.
