I served 13 years in the Army. When I got out, I figured my aches and pains were just part of the deal. Everybody hurts, right? I didn't think I 'qualified' for anything β I wasn't wounded in combat, I didn't have a purple heart. I thought VA benefits were for guys who had it worse than me.
Years later, a buddy mentioned he'd filed for his back and his knees β conditions from carrying a ruck and wearing body armor for a decade. Same stuff I dealt with every day. He told me there was no deadline to file. That one conversation changed everything.
I started researching. I found out that most of my conditions β the back pain, the hearing loss, the sleep issues β were all service-connected. I filed an Intent to File to lock in my date, gathered my records, and submitted my claim. It wasn't fast, but it wasn't as hard as I thought.
I got the help I needed. I'm healthier now than I was when I first got out. The rating was part of it, but the real win was understanding that I earned these benefits β and that asking for help isn't weakness. That's why I built this site.
